HV30 review…

Posted by Rick Burnett on January 24th, 2009 filed in General News

Today my HV30 arrived and I’ve been learning the inside and outside of this camera, hands down. One thing I can tell you for sure is that rolling shutter is definitely different on different cameras. Having known that all CMOS sensors suffer from this artifact since none of them employ a global shutter, I didn’t want to see the same performance as my D90.

I setup a test where I placed both cameras at the same location, then shook them up and down, then left and right. I’d like to do this test again with both cameras tied to the same mount, but for now, this is sufficient. Here is a look at how the video turned out:

Rolling Shutter Test Canon HV30 vs Nikon D90 from Rick Burnett on Vimeo.

As you can see, the D90 is much worse in both the jello effect and the skew at the same light. Given the larger sensor size, I wonder if the circuitry for the D90 is just a lot slower at going through all the steps it has to, or, does it actually scan the whole CMOS sensor (which would take longer since it is larger) and they only pull off what they are going to use? No matter what, I think they should come out with some metrics for demonstrating rolling shutter speed. While I understand the complexity of how it works, I would have rather known about the D90s limitations before I purchased it. However, I also understand that the D90 is intended for taking pictures, of which it does an amazing job and I couldn’t be happier.

One enhancement that could be certainly added to the HV30 is allowing more control over the settings in the camera. While they have exceptionally more control than the D90, having to calculate what is going on based on the current settings hack (which is not really a hack, but what someone noticed, if you have a memory card in it, pressing the photo button part way in will show you the current settings of the camera, then you can lock the exposure and adjust it up and down which works) is a bit of a pain.

Now I will continue obtaining the parts for the 35mm DIY. I have purchased the EOS extension tubes, the step up ring, and the achromat. The next step is the Nikon mount for the EOS, a few filters, the gg holder and vibrator, the focusing screen and all the electronics to drive it.

One thing I am struggling with is if I want to go with a flip mount rail system to hold the camera upside down and just install the flip hack myself into the LCD, or, do I want to wait for a flip unit and put that in line with the camera and just use a regular rail system. Maybe I’ll just talk to the company and buy both adapters with one set of rails and have the ability to do both if it’s not overly pricey. I also want to add in a nice handle on the top for lower shots, with the steady cam idea that I am developing.
